Canadian Flotilla Activists Demand Government Action Over Detention Claims
The activists said they were detained during the mission and claimed they were subjected to severe mistreatment, including physical and psychological abuse. One participant, Safa Chebbi, stated that detainees experienced beatings, sleep deprivation, threats, and other forms of violence during custody.
Reports indicate that the group sent multiple formal requests to Canadian officials seeking meetings with senior government representatives, including the prime minister and foreign affairs leadership, but said they have not received a response.
The activists also accused Canada of continuing military cooperation with Israel while failing to hold it accountable, and called for sanctions and an arms embargo.
Another participant, Ehab Lotayef, who is affiliated with flotilla organizing networks, criticized the level of consular assistance provided during their detention. He contrasted this with support they said was received in Türkiye after their release.
He also described the conditions of detention as overcrowded and harsh, alleging limited food supplies and poor treatment.
The activists’ remarks reflect ongoing criticism directed at Ottawa over its handling of flotilla-related detentions and broader foreign policy positions related to the Gaza conflict.
