Canada Says It Won’t Establish Relations with Iran Without Regime Change
She emphasized the necessity for Iran to address ongoing human rights abuses, saying,
“the repressive Iranian regime must curtail the consistent and illegal violation of Iranian human rights, including by respecting international law and international humanitarian law.”
Anand also revealed that Canada has imposed new sanctions on seven individuals “linked to Iranian state bodies responsible for intimidation, violence and transnational repression targeting Iranian dissidents and human rights defenders.”
Diplomatic relations between Canada and Iran were cut off in 2012 under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper due to human rights concerns. Since then, Canada has maintained sanctions and trade restrictions while pursuing international legal action related to the downing of a passenger plane carrying Canadians.
At the same time, the United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East by deploying an additional aircraft carrier, destroyers, fighter jets, and surveillance aircraft.
Anand noted that Canada’s regional priorities focus on human rights issues and refrained from stating whether the country would support a U.S. military strike.
